Money & Art | Why is it important to make money & why we don’t like to talk about it?

Why Making Money is Important and Why We Don’t Like to Talk About it.

The reason why we don’t talk about money, money in the arts, money in our homes, why we’re not looking at our bank account, is because we have all of these old stories. I’m gonna go back to Jen Sincero in her book, what she said about rewriting our story. So you have this belief that money is bad and money can’t buy me happiness. Think about what makes you happy. What makes you fulfilled? What really is it in life that you want? And if you close the circle, money is the driver to all of those. Money buys the things that make you happy. Money pays for the coach. Money pays for you to learn more. Money pays for your children to be healthy or to go to school. Money pays for you to gain experience and meet other people. If you don’t have money, you can’t pay to get in the rooms where the people are in that will challenge you and make you rise to the next level.

Money has no label as a collective. The label comes from every individual. Why are we saying it is bad? Because it brings out fight or flight in us. Because people that don’t have inner peace and a good level of awareness will never know when it’s enough. I think that’s really where it is.

Let’s look at us as dancers. It comes from the top on how we’re seeing the industry, on how we’re seeing what the pay grades are. It’s not only that the administrative staff and the directors make 10 times as much as the dancers. It’s also then the women make even less than the men do. All of that is coming from the very top, like from the actual energy that the arts are putting out. Everybody can start changing that energy. Everybody can start feeling proud of taking home their 3 grand a month or 4 or 5 and ask the question, “Okay, how can I make more?” because if you make more, you can then help others to make more to. Or even if that’s not your jam, you can give others permission that it is okay to make money. It’s a beautiful thing. It doesn’t mean that you have to go and buy and keep it all for yourself and go buy the Lamborghini that you are actually judging others for having. You could get some solutions that would make others happy.

Switch Perspective

A very easy switch in perspective or even have the wording would change your energy around money. Let’s just say you have $500 on your account. You have two choices. You can look at it and say, “Oh my gosh, how am I gonna pay all these bills? What am I going to do? This is not enough.” Or you can say, “500 bucks isn’t grand. It’s not where I want to be. However, I am grateful for the money that I have on my account. What else can I do to make some more? How can I open myself up to? What can I start creating?” It’s possible. You just need to have the faith and the brainpower, the awareness that you’re able to do that?

On the Lewis Howes podcast with Bob Proctor, there was one thing that he said. For somebody that makes $100,000 a year, the only reason why he’s not making that a month is because he doesn’t know that that’s actually available to him. That is the only difference. It’s not about their knowledge. It’s not about the certification. It’s not about what your physical skills are. It’s about your level of awareness that it is actually possible. Because if you don’t believe it, nobody else will believe it. If you don’t believe in yourself showing up on stage and being worth $200,000 a year as a dancer, even as a core dancer, then you’re not going to get it. When you start leveling up and understanding and coming from a place of love, not just showing up in New York yearly conversations with your directors and demanding more, you have to raise the vibration first.

Give yourself the permission to look outside of your bubble and be okay. Just for you to have an idea doesn’t mean you have to follow it. Play it out to the end, see what it feels like. Go the next step and the next step. You will get to where you’re supposed to be not in a straight line. It is not a straight shot. You will go around it and you will take a little off roads and then you will fall down the hill, but you will always end back upon the path that you’re supposed to take. The only thing in the way is your ego telling you that no, no. You have to put those pointe shoes on and be on stage, and that’s the only way you can get your worth through others.

External Validation

It has come out that validation for dancers particularly comes most of the time from the outside. We’re looking at dancers like as a whole, as a collective. They have no idea on how to give themselves validation. Because that whole angriness I’m never enough. I never do enough. That thinking and believing is breastfed quite honestly. Empowering yourself to know who you are and what you want is your ticket to find exactly what you’re supposed to do.

It doesn’t matter who you are on stage. It doesn’t matter who you are with the makeup on and the mic in your hand. What really matters is who you are when nobody was watching. That goes for how we look at money as well. If you don’t feel worthy of making something, if you think that your passion and your purpose can’t make you money, indeed, you will not make the money. We’re telling you that you should because you’re putting so many years of hard sweat and love into this. These years where the belief is coming from, that success cannot be equaling something that you love doing. That’s over. We’re far beyond that.

That is why self-development is so important. Knowing the mind, knowing who you are, knowing something about psychology and physiology, all of these things is not just for doctors. They’re the experts. You don’t have to be an expert in order to know and to get to know yourself. It takes 45 minutes a day for 30 days, and you will have a really good knowledge base on any subject that you want to learn more about. If that’s you, which I would recommend strongly that you get to know yourself because that’s actually in the way of you showing up more and better as a dancer on stage at 7:00 p.m. at night that you’re putting in those 45 minutes a day. Like 45 minutes can be found anywhere. We talked about that in the last podcast on how you can structure your time.

Embrace Change and Take Action

The progress and the process of becoming us consistently change. We’re never the same. How does that tie into money? We can’t stay where we are right now. We can’t be the version of ourselves we are right now, and just happen to fall into the next opportunity or more abundance, more money by being here because our life right now is reflective, everything that’s around us our relationship, all of the things and money is reflective of how we behave and think and act now and where our energies are. If we think that we want to change the situation until we start to put it into action, what is that? If I want to make another $10,000 a year, what does that $10,000 version of me do that I’m not doing right now. You’ve got to start to do those things now and start to move those behaviors or change the way you frame your day, add one thing into your day, add two things, whatever, to start to behave like that version of you that you’re wanting.

If we sit in the version of ourselves now and just keep thinking and hoping and dreaming, if you don’t do anything about them, it’s not a movie. It just doesn’t like poof, happen. What you’re doing is the exact example of how to create or how to reflect what money does and how it behaves around you based on you reflecting on how you behave around it. If it’s not your ideal, then what are the behaviors that you need to start moving into? Because you are never going to see that until you start moving into that.

Starts with Awareness

It all starts with awareness. What you don’t know you don’t know. Meaning that even that can be actually really overwhelming. There’s so much to know that you know there is so much to know. You don’t know everything either, and you really have this belief that you do need to know everything in order to be valuable for everybody out there. That’s why the debate of getting a degree in business and psychology and all of this. These are just things that society actually puts on us. Awareness around yourself. Who are you and who do you want to be? That is not something that you write down or come to the conclusion of within 45 minutes. That is a process that will take you years, and that’s why it is so important to start today. It’s having the trust and understanding that the people that are around you are always influencing who you are.

So look at the people that are around you. That might be a good awareness piece to start with. You can have all the goals in the world. You can have all the hard work in place. You can go into the studio for 18 hours a day. If you’re not surrounded by the right tribe, all of this doesn’t matter. So here we go. Look at the people that are around you. Are they supportive of who and what you are, or are they not? That’s where your awareness piece you can start reviving that. So start with the people in your life. Are they helpful or not?

One Step at a Time

Take one step at a time and reflect on what behaviors are throughout your day right now. Perhaps take a look at where you could maybe rework a couple of those areas. What new habit could you adopt into what your current days look like? That could get you one step closer to whatever you come up with that you want to be. Who do you want to be also then has to get broken down into what does that version of you do on a daily basis to be that person? It comes from our energy and how we show up. But then there’s a level of action that must be taken with that as well.

So, what are your current habits and behaviors? And maybe where could you tweak some of those to just take one step like that? Have 45 minutes when you really break it down to it to develop a new habit or a new skill or just start to expand yourself? It doesn’t take another eight-hour a day for you.

So where could you start to grow and create a new habit?

So much ❤ Susanne

There is a better way to pursue ballet at the professional level. Instead of dancers pushing beyond their body’s limits, there is a healthier way to train your body, your mind and your spirit to soar. To become the best at your craft, you must be healthy. The mentality of surviving to make a performance perfect is an old paradigm that needs to change. As athletes, dancers must thrive in order to shine and connect with their audience. This new approach, leads to fulfillment, strength and longevity. It allows you to give more of your heart and soul on stage, creating an unforgettable experience that moves your audience. And that’s the whole pointe.
